Series  Galatians: Life, Law and Liberty

Context  Westminster Chapel Toronto

Topic  Discipleship

Scripture  Galatians 6:1-10

Sowing the seeds of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives means we increasingly radiate the glory of God, and its result is eternal life in the presence of God.

Scripture:  Galatians 6:1-10

Sermon Notes:

  1. The Holy Spirit is like an orchestra conductor over the lives of believers.  We must be sensitive to His leading, keeping in step with the Spirit.
  2. The Spirit calls us to help a brother who has been caught up in sin.  Restoring him may involve personal risk, coming close to a messy situation.
  3. Those who are walking in the fruit of the Spirit are best qualified for this ministry, which may involve temptations to sin and spiritual pride.
  4. We are to restore the sinning person in a spirit of gentleness, exercising love within the body of Christ.
  5. Within the body, we’re to walk close to one another, bearing others’ burdens self-sacrificially as Christ laid down His life for us.
  6. The law of Christ, which we’re to live out, is the Bible, the law of God. In particular we are to obey Christ’s command to love one another.
  7. We are called to freedom which is found in serving one another in obedience to God’s commands.
  8. A sign of Christian maturity is the ability to accurately and honestly assess your own walk.
  9. Each one is to take their life calling and responsibilities seriously, carrying their own weight.
  10. Pastors are to teach and we’re to share good things with them.
  11. We reap what we sow; don’t turn your nose up at God if you don’t like what you’re reaping.
  12. The works of the flesh must be starved or we’ll reap destruction (1 Corinthians 6:9).
  13. Sowing the seeds of the fruit of the Spirit will result in eternal life.
  14. Eternal life is a rich and full life in the presence of God full of joy and peace.
  15. As we learn to walk in the fruit of the Spirit, we’ll increasingly radiate God’s glory.
  16. Do not grow weary of doing good. Take every opportunity to serve the needs of others, especially among God’s people.
  17. We’re to be joyful, for the Lord has done great things for us (cf. Psalm 126).
  18. In the Lord’s Supper, Christ feeds our souls, nourishing spiritual life in community together.

Application Questions:

  1. When, how and why should we go about restoring a sinning brother or sister?
  2. What are some practical ways we can fulfill the law of Christ in our congregation this week?
  3. What does it mean to “test your own work” (Galatians 6:4)?
  4. How am I serving God?  Am I carrying out the work I’m called to in life?
  5. How can we avoid weariness in doing good?
