Blessed are Those Who Hunger and Thirst after Righteousness
Biblically, righteousness is conformity to God's norms.
Blessed are the Meek
The Meek are the strong in the Lord, broken by God to be harnessed for God's use. Meekness is the opposite of unbridled anger.
Blessed are Those Who Mourn
A truly repentant man will not only mourn for his own sin, but also the condition of the world around him.
Riches in Poverty
Sin is deceitful, offering us many ways to make us happy, but ultimately all but Christ's offer of blessed life leads to misery and death.
The Mountain of Covenant Blessing
Jesus applies the meaning of the law to His kingdom people. He tells us of the blessed life which puts God before all things.
The Unity of the Body
There does not need to be peace and tranquility for there to be unity. Covenant community life in the body of Christ is messy. We are called to tolerate one another's faults and forebear with one another.
The Helper and the Keeper
When we face trouble, we need to look away from ourselves and look to God for rescue.
Seeds of Regeneration
Our task is to sow the seed of regeneration everywhere by the work and power of the Holy Spirit. We should not place false confidence in man's enlightened reason to transform society.
A Mighty Fortress is Our God
We don't like to speak of those who oppose God as our enemies. But because they hate Christ, they also hate us. We need to recognize that, and stop deluding ourselves that we can remove the offense of the Gospel. To God's enemies: Be still. That is, stop your futile resistance against God. The battle is won. What appear to be battles are mere skirmishes on the plain of victory. When we avail ourselves of the power of God, we will see God moving mightily.
Created for Joy
The deepest longings of the soul are only satisfied in God. We are all worshipers at heart, and we are conformed to the image of the thing that we worship.
