Sermons in Covenant

In the midst of the betrayal of Absalom and many of his close associates, one great question arises: Will King David remain loyal to God and his covenant?

Peter’s call to action is a call to renew our Hope and the pursuit of Holiness, both of which will be brought to perfection on the day of Christ’s return.

David first needed the protection of Jonathan's friendship, and then God's spirit among the prophets, and now the covenant he made with Jonathan which reflects the Covenant of Grace that God has with David's descendants.

1 Samuel 14 is an account of faith and folly. Jonathan shows us how to live and act in covenant faithfulness. Saul’s foolishness is a warning about living and acting in our own wisdom and strength.

1 Samuel 12 outlines a pattern of covenant renewal in which we see the basic shape of the Gospel and the pattern of Christian worship on a Sunday morning.

1 Samuel 9 reveals God’s faithful providence in history and in our lives. We live and serve in the confidence of God’s calling and faithfulness.

Although God had promised Israel a king to point toward the greater reign of Christ over the nations and to bind the people ever closer to the covenant, Israel’s demand for a king like all the other nations sprang from another motive – the desire for an alternate sovereign to get them further away from God.  The scriptures show however, that any attempt to replace the sovereignty of God with another source of sovereignty can only lead to decay and the collapse of freedom.  The modern West is testament to these consequences.

The captivity and return of the ark of God is a warning to us about the heavy hand of God’s presence and convenient, compromised, and careless worship before him.

1 Samuel 4 is a warning to us about our own presumption before God and God’s judgment. 

God calls people to an office for the purpose of ruling and protecting his people.

Haggai calls us to consider who we are, to consider God's presence, and to consider God's promised blessing.

The 70 years are almost over and deliverance draws near. Instead of rejoicing over the coming restoration Daniel is confessing his grief and fear for Israel’s lack of reform.
